January,1988--Disproportionate number of athletes among houses prompts committee to suggest quota system to promote `diversity'. Masters postpone debate to fall.

November, 1988--Masters propose plan to set aside 25 percent of participating houses' space for random assignment.

December, 1988--The Undergraduate Council condemns the masters' plan as unfair and ineffective within days.

February 1--Dean of the College L. Fred Jewett '57 accepts masters' plan. Four houses choose not to participate.

February 9--Hundreds of freshmen present petition protesting changes.

March 1--Citing masters' change of heart, Jewett kills the plan.
