Green Upsets Icewomen, 2-1

When the mighty fall, they fall hard.

The Harvard and Princeton women's ice hockey team entered this weekend's Ivy League tournament ranked first and second in the league, respectively. The Crimson had wrapped up its third consecutive Ivy League title, decisively beating Princeton, 4-1, last week.

But the results of Saturday's opening round were a shocker.

Harvard's season came to a premature end when it lost to Dartmouth, 2-1, in overtime at Bright Center. Cornell upset Princeton in the other semifinal.

In yesterday's championships game, the Big Green and the Big Red battled to a scoreless tie in regulation behind strong goaltending for both teams.

Dartmouth's Lori Jacobs connected on the rebound off a Judy Parish shot at 2:49 into the overtime period to clinch the tournament championship.

Dartmouth (16-8-2) will represent the Ivy League in the ECAC Tournament next week. The Big Green entered this weekend's tournament riding on a six-game league winning streak, which included wins over Princeton last Sunday and the Crimson last Tuesday night.

In Saturday's game, Harvard (15-8-1) took the early lead, when Char Joslin scored an unassisted power-play goal at 12:50 into the second period. Dartmouth tied the game with less than three minutes remaining in the game, when Parish connected off a pass from Sarah Pettus.

"We played so much better [Saturday] than we did Tuesday," Tri-Captain Jen White said. "That [first] goal really fired them up and put them back in the game."

Dynamic Duo

The same duo responsible for the game-winning goal against Cornell clinched the victory for Dartmouth on Saturday when Jacobs scored off a Parish feed at 4:15 in the overtime period.

As in last Tuesday's 5-1 loss, the Crimson outshot Dartmouth by a significant margin. While the Big Green's Kelley Coyne had to contend with 40 shots on goal, White faced only 22 shots. The difference was even greater last Tuesday, when Harvard outshot the Green, 36-12.

"They played really good defense on us, and their goalie made some amazing saves," White said.
