Bond Refutes Paternity

ATLANTA--Civil-rights leader and Visiting Professor of Afro-American Studies H. Julian Bond denied in court papers yesterday that he is father to a child born to an Atlanta-based flight attendant.

In his answer to a paternity lawsuit filed Sept. 15 by Deborah Kaye Moore, Bond said he was never informed by Moore that she was pregnant or that she had given birth to a daughter. Mia Lauren Moore was born August 17, 1988.

The pleadings filed yesterday are the first public reply to the allegations that Bond fathered the girl and that he has refused to help support her.

Bond and his lawyer, Edward T.M. Garland, declined comment after the lawsuit was filed. A hearing is scheduled November 17.

Bond is a former Georgia state senator who now is host to a television talk show in Washington, D.C.

Moore also is seeking reimbursement for her medical expenses, the appointment of a guardian to represent her daughter's interest in the case and permanent custody of the child.

Bond asked the court to dismiss the lawsuit and said he should not be forced to pay child support or Moore's expenses in delivering the baby.
