Education Committee Holds First Meeting

In its first meeting of the fall term, the Committee on Undergraduate Education (CUE) yesterday discussed changes in this year's CUE Guide to Courses as well as proposals for next year's version.

Committee members were pleased that this year's guide, which featured student evaluations on more than 400 courses, was the largest ever, said Sara L. Norman '90, CUE guide editor. The committee also discussed last year's decision to exclude the "memorable quotes" section of the guide, an omission that disappointed many students.

Committee Chair and Associate Dean for Undergraduate Education David Pilbeam said the omission reflected the "consensus" of last year's committee that the quotes "acted as a discouragement toward faculty to allow evaluations." Under the current system, instructors may refuse to have their course evaluated in the CUE guide.

Pilbeam also said that the Faculty of Arts and Sciences' Finance Office approved yesterday an unspecified amount of money to purchase Apple MacIntosh computers for use in producing future CUE guides.

According to a report released by Norman, the CUE paid more than $8000 for using Science Center computers last year, after several years of decreasing costs.

The committee, made up of Pilbeam, five students and five faculty members, also outlined the year's agenda. Pilbeam said the committee would evaluate and, if necessary, suggest changes in the College's tutorial system.
