Two members of the Harvard lacrosse team, Tri-Captain Bill Pennoyer and freshman Mickey Cavuoti, earned All-America honorable mention honors this month after leading the Crimson to the NCAA Tournament in May.
Pennoyer, an outstanding defenseman, led a strong Harvard backfield which helped the Crimson to an 11-4 overall record, its best since 1980. The senior led Harvard defensemen in scoring with four assists and was second on the squad with 69 groundballs.
Cavuoti, who was also named Ivy League Rookie of the Year, led all Crimson scorers last spring. He fired in 26 goals while handing out 19 assists for a total of 45 points.
"We had a lot of good players this year," Cavuoti said, "and there were a lot of people who could have won it instead of me."
In addition to their All-America honors, both Cavuoti and Pennoyer were named to the All-New England first team. Tri-Captain Mike Bergmann was named to the All-New England second team for his play at net, while senior defenseman Brian McGinley and sophomore midfielder Perry Dodge were honorable mention selections.
Harvard's season ended when the squad fell to Navy, 10-9, in a first-round game of the NCAA Tournament at Ohiri Field. The Crimson earned its only other bid to the tourney in 1980, when it fell in a quarterfinal game to John Hopkins, 16-12.
"It was definitely a satisfying season," Cavuoti said. "We could have done better, but it was a lot better than most people expected."
