To the Editors of The Crimson:
I am compelled to comment on the running of the 17th Harvard Raft Race last Sunday. During the conduct of this event. large quantities of garbage and non-biodegradable pollutants were thrown into the already sufficiently dirty Charles River. Should such an environmentally unsatisfactory event have been sponsored by my military organization, loud (and proper) objections would quickly have been made by environmentalists, students and the media. In reading your May 2nd edition, the coverage of this ecological disaster implies that Harvard University not only condones this behavior, but participates at the executive level. I am saddened by this observation.
Shame on you Harvard, you should show more concern and respect for your surroundings! Captain James R. Lynch U.S.Navy Kennedy School of Government
