Women Harriers First in GBCs

The Harvard women's track team won the Greater Boston Championships Sunday to wrap up a record-breaking weekend.

The Crimson women totaled 80 points for the day to beat Northeastern (2nd), Boston University (3rd), Boston College (4th) and Tufts (5th).

Harvard placed in the top five in all long distance events. Woden Teachout and Merrill McKenzie swept the 10,000 meters, finishing first and second, respectively. Sarah Wilcox placed second in the five kilometer run. Romney Resney was runner-up in the 3000 meters with a time of 10:01.2 and Tina Lount took fifth in the 1500 meters.

In the middle distance races, Beth Pfefferle took the 800 meters in 2:17.4. Meredith Rainey won the 400 meters and Carol Kirton took second.

The Crimson women flew sky high, as Rainey set an all-time Harvard record in the 200 meters at 24.5 seconds. Rainey placed second and Dowling came in fifth. In the 100 meter dash, Dowling took third and Michelle Davis placed fifth. Harvard's Katrina Posta and Allison Goodman finished second and third, respectively, in the 100 meter hurdles, and Co-Captain Nancy Lutz took second in the 400 meter intermediate hurdles.

In the relays, Harvard won the mile relay in 3:51.1 and finished second in the 400 meter relay with a time of 50.7 seconds.

In the field events, Jennifer Dunne was runner-up in the long jump with a leap of 16-ft. 5 1/2-in. Manda Schossberger took fourth in the triple jump, and Katrina Posta placed fifth in the triple.

In the throwing events, Jennifer St. Louis won the javelin and Schossberger took fifth. St. Louis also took third in the hammer and discus. Colleen Collins placed fourth in the hammer and Susan Bukata was fifth in the shot put.

The Harvard men's team was runner-up in yesterday's GBCs behind Northeastern. Harvard scored 77 points to beat B.U. (3rd), MIT (4th), B.C. (5th), Brandeis (6th) and Tufts (7th)

In the jumping events, Chris Sullivan was runner-up in the high jump with a leap of 6-ft., 8-in. and Crimson basketball star Ralph James came off the courts to place in the long jump. Rutledge Simmons took third in the triple, spanning a distance of 45-ft., 8 1/4-in.

The Crimson also competed in the Penn Relays over the weekend. The Harvard women's mile relay won the Heps heat with a time of 3:44.4, beating Harvard's school record by more than five seconds.

The Crimson men fared best in the throwing events at the Penn Relays, as James Russell placed third in the hammer throw and Nic Sweeney took fourth in the discus.
