Senior goalie Bruce Racine turned aside 25 of 28 shots and earned MVP honors as Northeastern beat two-time defending champion Boston University, 6-3, in the finals of the 36th annual Beanpot Hockey Tournament.

Racine, who shut out Boston College in last week's first round game, held the Terriers scoreless through two periods last night while his teammates built a 3-0 lead.

Joe MacInnis was credited with an unassisted goal to get Northeastern on the scoreboard just 2:49 into the game, as he pushed Terrier goalie Peter Fish's clearing attempt into the net.

The Huskies improved the lead to 3-0 in the second period. Peter Schure scored at 7:46 and Harry Mews followed at 14:05. Both goals came after Racine robbed the Terriers on breakaway attempts.

Boston University sliced the deficit to 3-2 with quick strikes early in the third period, Mike Sullivan scored at 39 seconds and Mike Kelfer, last year's MVP, netted a power-play goal at 3:01.

However, Northeastern responded with three straight goals. Dave Buda made it 4-2 at 4:51 and teammate David O'Brien added two insurance goals to secure the victory.

Chris McCann closed out the scoring for the Terriers with his first collegiate goal with just 13 seconds remaining in the game.

It was Northeastern's fourth Beanpot title in tournament's history. All four championships came in the 1980s. It also marked the second time Racine capture Tournament MVP honors. Racine first notched the award two years ago, the last time Northeastern captured the 'Pot.

Boston University made it to the finals of this year's 'pot by overcoming a 3-1 deficit and defeating Harvard, 6-4 The Terriers were looking to capture their fourth Beanpot in the '80s.

Northeastern is now 14-9-4 and Boston University dropped to 11-13-3. Both teams are battling for playoff spots in their conference, Hockey East. The Beanpot, which does not count in league standings, unofficially determines the best Boston area college hockey team, although many promising teams often finish out of the money in the 'pot.
