Graham Brothers Face Hearings

By Emily Mieras

Two sons of Cambridge City Councillor Saundra Graham face hearings this month in Cambridge District Court on charges of drug trafficking and possession.

Darrell Graham, 25, is charged with trafficking in cocaine in Cambridge. He has pleaded not guilty to the charge and a hearing is set for March 4 to decide if there is "probable cause" for the case to continue. If cause is found, the case will be brought before a grand jury, said Graham's attorney, Judith L. Lindahl. Lindahl would not comment further on the case.

David Graham, 23, has been charged with possession of cocaine with intent to distribute. He is pleading not guilty, and a motions hearing for his case will be held on February 24.

David Graham's attorney, Henry P. Sorett, declined to comment on the case, saying, "I really think it's inappropriate for me to comment on a criminal case that's up for trial."

Darrell Graham was arrested in Boston on January 14 after several months of investigation and surveillance by Massachusetts, Boston, and Cambridge police, said Tom Samoluk, a spokesman for the Cambridge District Attorney's office.

He was released a few days after his arrest on $25,000 bail in cash.

David Graham turned himself in to Cambridge police on January 18, three days after a warrant had been issued for his arrest.

Soon after the arrests, defense attorneys made a motion to impound the affidavit necessary for the issue of a search warrant, but Samuluk said Cambridge district Court Judge Wendie Gershengorn quashed the motion. The search warrant consequently will become a matter of public record.

Neither Saundra Graham nor her sons could be reached for comment.

Clifford Truesdale, the head of the Democratic City Committee, said he did not think the arrests would hurt Saundra Graham politically.

"I think people will make a clear distinction between a good city councillor and an unlucky parent," Truesdale said.
