Council Selects Delegates For Corporation Meeting

The Undergraduate Council last night approved a slate of delegates to attend the upcoming meeting with the Corporation, despite strong opposition from one council member.

Council member Andreas Beroutsos '88 said he disagreed with the Executive Board's decision to invite five of its own members to fill the six council slots. Beroutsos offered his own slate of representatives to attend the March 14 meeting with Harvard's chief governing body.

The Executive Board is composed of the council chairman, vice chairman, treasurer, secretary and the five committee chairmen.

The approved Executive Board slate consists of Chairman Evan J. Mandery '89, Vice Chairman Jeffrey A. Cooper '90, Services Committee Chairman Debbie J. Slotnick '90, Social Committee Chairman Ron S. Lee '90 and Academics Committee Chairman ToddC. Flynn '88. The sixth person on the slate isRobert Weissman '88-89, a political activist andcouncil member who has campaigned loudly for anopen meeting of the Corporation.

"I think the Executive Board decided withinthemselves just to keep things in the family,"Beroutsos said.

Beroutsos moved to include Mandery, Cooper,Weissman, Amy B. Zegart '89, Ken E. Lee '89, andhimself.

Randall T. Kempner '91 agreed with Beroutsos."I think there might be a difference between thepeople elected to committee chairs and those whoknow what's going on at the Harvard Corporation,"he said.

"What kind of message do we send that when itcomes to issues of real leadership we have to goback to the council" for delegate selection, askedCooper.

The Executive Board, and not the full council,is the proper arena for decisions such asdelegates to the Corporation meeting, saidTheodore Liazos '89.

Beroutsos repeatedly spoke out of turn duringthe proceedings, and Mandery said at one point,"Andreas, calm down."

After the full council approved the ExecutiveBoard's list of delegates by a vote of 38 to 15,Beroutsos continued to speak in defense of hisposition. Mandery declared him out of order, butBeroutsos continued talking.

Beroutsos said after the meeting, "I think thatthe council just decided on a slate of people whowere officers and didn't look past that initialqualification."

After selection of student representatives wasfinalized, discussion shifted to the delegates'agenda.

Kimberly B. Laden '87-88, who is not a councilmember, said the students should encourage theCorporation to take a neutral stance in thecampaign for Harvard Union of Clerical andTechnical Workers (HUCTW) to win recognition as anofficial bargaining unit.

Eric Allina '90 said "the lack of certainethnic departments at Harvard" should be on theagenda.

Jonathan D. Hacker '90 said divestment shouldbe discussed, and members of Stop WithholdingAccess Today (SWAT) urged the studentrepresentatives to support the complaint filed byLisa J. Schkolnick '88 against the Fly Club'sall-male membership rules
