The Cornell women's basketball team's media guide is entitled "Projecting into the Future"--and why not? The Big Red entered last night's game against Harvard at Barton Hall in Ithaca, N.Y. without any seniors and only one junior on its roster.
Unfortunately for Cornell Coach Linda Lerch, that roster doesn't include Michael J. Fox or his time machine, and her projector went dead on Back to the Future.
Harvard rudely dragged the Big Red back to the present, staking itself a 34-12 halftime lead, and its bench cruised to a 62-50 final score.
The Crimson (17-3, 8-0 Ivy) limited Karen Walker, Cornell's leading scorer, to only eight points in the game, thanks to the defensive efforts of Tri-Captain Sharon Hayes.
"We focused on Walker and Froehly [Cornell junior center Patti Froehlich], and the rest just didn't play well," junior forward Sarah Duncan said.
The Big Red (8-11, 0-9 Ivy) contributed to the blowout by hitting only 27 percent of its shots from the field and less than half of its foul shots.
"We ran the break well tonight--especially Barb [Keffer]," Duncan said.
Tri-Captain and point guard Keffer topped the team's scoring list with 16 points, most off the transition game, and also contributed four steals to the team's incredible total of 18.
NOTEBOOK: Harvard remains two games up on Princeton and Dartmouth (both 7-2 Ivy) after last night's action. The Tigers squeaked by Yale, 69-65, while Dartmouth was crushing Columbia (11-10, 3-6 Ivy) in New York City, where the Crimson plays tonight...The Lions' defeat in Levien Gym was only its second home loss in 10 games this year.
