Icemen Get Ready For Big Red Raid Of Bright

The Harvard hockey team will face its most challenging home series of the year this weekend. when Colgate and Cornell visit Bright Center for 7:30 p.m. games.

Colgate. tonight's guest. beat the Crimson. 4-1. in Hamilton, N.Y., in early December and is now in fourth place in the ECAC with a 10-5-1 record.

"That was a long time ago." Raider Coach Terry Slater said of Colgate's upset of Harvard. "We don't want to play Harvard now."

The Red Raiders play a hard-hitting brand of hockey. But since defeating the Crimson, they've stumbled on hard times. Prized goaltender Wayne Cowley was injured in a car accident and is still recuperating. And the Raiders dropped a pair of games to Princeton. not one of the league's powerhouses.

"We haven't been the same type of club we were before Christmas." Slater said. "We're not scoring. Right now, we're looking to stay in one of those top four sports."

Cornell (11-5 ECAC) won seven games in a row before dropping a 6-3 contest to St. Lawrence in Canton. N.Y. The Saints scored six goals in the third period to defeat the Big Red.

"Against St. Lawrence. we didn't play well for 20 minutes," Cornell Coach Brian McCutcheon said.

But over the last two months--ever since Harvard bumped off the Big Red, 3-1, in Ithaca, N.Y.--Cornell has been on a roll.

"It's hard to measure how much we've improved," said McCutcheon, who is in his first year as Big Red coach. "[The players have] grown accustomed to the system, playing with a new coach."
