The thousands of Democratic partisans gathered at the World Trade Center last night were prepared for a loss by Gov. Michael S. Dukakis. Even so, as the election returns rolled in, the crowd seemed unprepared for the stunning defeat.
Supporter Jim Lecault said the atmosphere was "like a balloon, waiting to burst...there is a lot of anxiety and disappointment."
Partaking in Greek pastries under arches of balloons, Dukakis backers awaited the governor's arrival while watching the evening's sobering returns on large television screens. When negative results were broadcast, the picture was switched to a rock band playing for the party.
"I'm very upset. There is a defeatist attitude around here. We still have a chance, but it is obviously not looking good," said Boston University student Rebecca Morrison.
Although appearances by comedian Robert Klein, actor Rob Lowe, Senator John Kerry and Dukakis, who spoke shortly after 11 p.m., revived the audience, one supporter described the mood as "restrained, noncommital."
"They are Dukakis emotions, very steady, somber and serious," said Gary Bettger, a Kennedy School of Government student.
