Arguing that the space program should be discontinued in order to fund the search for alien life, the Harvard debate team trounced Johns Hopkins University this weekend, winning a Brown University tournament to claim its first victory in almost two years.

"The last time we won was in my sophomore year, so I'm really thrilled," said Patrick J. Bannon '89. "It's pretty discouraging when the audience votes you down week after week."

The first-place victory, over 92 other teams, qualifies Harvard for the national championship.

Bannon, who has a broken ankle, said he was forced to wear bermuda shorts with his coat and tie, and added that his injury may have helped Harvard's standings. "I figure I got us some sympathy votes," he said.
