W. Booters Hound New Hampshire, 1-0

It's always nice to be in the right place at the right time. Especially when the right place is right in front of the net.

Just ask freshman forward Christin Biggs, who scored the only goal for the Harvard women's soccer team in yesterday's 1-0 victory over the University of New Hampshire at the Oyster River High School Field in Durham, NH.

"I feel lucky," Biggs said. "It was a great cross from [Co-Captain Karin Pinezich]. I hope I'm always in the right place at the right time."

The goal came at the 29th minute of the first half as Pinezich crossed the ball to Biggs in the box. The freshman shot, but the ball rebounded off UNH goalie Janene Tilden back to Biggs, who calmly booted it into the right-hand corner of the net.

The goal lifted the Crimson's record to 2-0, and helped new Harvard Coach Tim Wheaton earn his second career victory and goalie Tracee Whitley her second shutout.

"She's one of the top goalies in the country," Wheaton said of Whitely, who doubles as the team co-captain. "She handles the situation with such control and confidence that she gives the rest of the team great confidence."

Whitley, a two-time All-America, recorded eight saves yesterday but was aided by a strong Harvard defense, led by junior sweeper Andrea Montalbano. The defense kept the Wildcats-who had been ranked 20th before the game and are now 1-2-from taking shots close to the goal.

"We mostly wanted just to go out there and prove that we were better than the rankings show," Whitley said.

"Tracee played great," Montalbano said. "She wasn't pressured all the time, but when she was, she came through.

The Crimson had a scare late in the second half as Wildcat Maura Naughton tried to chip a shot over Whitley. The goalkeeper dove backwards and made an acrobatic save, knocking the ball into the cross-bar.

The ball bounced down in front of the net to the feet of a Wildcat, who could not get off a shot at the open net. In the scramble that followed, sophomore fullback Amanda Slick cleared the ball for the Crimson, preserving the shutout.

THE NOTEBOOK: The Crimson will face a tough Holy Cross squad at Ohiri Field 11:00 a.m. Saturday...Earlier this year the Crusaders tied B.C., "one of the top teams in New England," according to Wheaton.
