In the Harvard baseball team's two doubleheaders this past weekend at Soldiers Field, the visiting teams--Army and Columbia--collected only 11 hits and three runs off the Crimson pitchers.
The starting foursome of Chris Marchok, Jim Chenevey, Bob Baxter and Kevin Curtin mowed down the Cadets and Lions to lead Harvard to four wins and a first-place tie with Navy in the Eastern Collegiate Baseball League.
In the opener against Army on Saturday, Marchok allowed the Cadets just one hit in the Crimson's 3-0 win.
Tossing his second complete-game shutout of the season, the senior struck out seven batters, walked two, and got the Cadets to ground into a pair of double plays.
In Harvard's 4-2 win in the nightcap, senior left-hander Chenevey struck out 10 batters and surrendered three hits in 4-2/3 frames before giving way to the Crimson relief corps. Although he is still without a decision in his three starts, Chenevey has posted 21 K's in just 14 innings on the mound.
Freshman hurler Baxter, who entered Sunday's first game against Columbia with a 0.00 ERA in 19-1/3 innings, flirted with a no-hitter for 5-2/3 innings before giving up a single.
The left-hander ended up throwing a complete-game two-hitter in Harvard's 2-0 victory, raising his record to 4-0 and keeping his 0.00 ERA.
Curtin, who picked up the save in Saturday's nightcap, hurled the team's third complete game of the weekend in Harvard's nine-inning, 2-1 win over the Lions in Sunday's second game.
After allowing three walks and a hit in the first inning, the senior right-hander settled down and gave up only three additional hits and two walks the rest of the way.
For their efforts this past weekend, the Harvard quartet of Marchok, Chenevy, Baxter and Curtin earns this week's spotlight.
