Track At Tri-Meet

The Harvard men's and women's track teams opened their outdoor seasons Saturday in a tri-meet with Dartmouth and Brown at Memorial Field in Hanover, N.H.

The women placed second with 66 points just behind Dartmouth (78) and well ahead of Brown (37) while the men's team placed third with 43 points, behind Dartmouth (93) and Brown (67).

Although they were not able to pull out the team victory, the women turned in a number of excellent individual performances.

Co-Captain Erin Sugrue won three events for the Harvard once again. Sugrue captured the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.88, edging freshman Patty Min, whose time of 15.38 gave her second place. Sugrue also took the high jump with a jump of 5-ft., 8-in. and the triple jump with a leap of 36 feet.

Freshman Meredith Rainey turned in a great afternoon, winning the 400-meter run in 54 seconds and the 200-meter race with a time of 24.90.

Lise Vansen, also a freshman, won the 1500-meter race with surprising ease in 4:37.8, while Tina Lount finished third with a time of 4:45.9.

Toby Worden won the 3000-meter run with a time of 10:03.7, while Co-Captain Frances Edozien placed second in the hammer with a throw of 102-ft., 4 3/4-in.

The men's team once again dominated in the field events, but struggled in the races. Thirty-four of the team's 43 points came in the field events.

Harvard won only two events in the men's meet. Junior James Russell, who placed third in the 35-lb, weight throw in the NCAA indoor championships last month, won the hammer throw with a toss of 195-ft., 1-in.

Sophomore Matt Collins won the javelin with a throw of 193-ft., 2-in. The Crimson swept the javelin event, as William Krause, Shawn Carew and John Grinalds all earned points for Harvard.

Co-Captain Rob Gustafson placed second in the long jump with a leap of 22-ft., 3 1/2-in. and took third in the high jump with a jump of 6-ft., 6-in.
