CUE Sends Tenure Plan To Faculty

A sharply divided Committee on Undergraduate Education (CUE) voted yesterday to forward an Undergraduate Council proposal which calls for increased student involvement in the tenure process to the steering committee of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences.

If the Faculty Council approves the plan, the full Faculty will vote on the proposal, which Dean of the Faculty A. Michael Spence has criticized heavily. The Faculty Council, which will consider the proposal next month, is unlikely to support the plan, said Steven E. Ozment, chairman of the CUE.

The students' plan, which comes in the wake of the University's denial of tenure to three popular junior faculty members, calls for student-faculty departmental committees to have a formal input in the tenure process.

Only one faculty member, Susan R. Suleiman, professor of romance and comparative literature, voted for the proposal which the five student members of CUE all supported. The other three faculty members on the committee voted to kill the proposal.
