Thinclads Thumped; Take Third at Tri-Meet

The Harvard men's and women's track team suffered tough defeats to Dartmouth and Brown Sunday in an indoor meet in Providence, R.I.

Dartmouth, Brown and Harvard finished one-two-three respectively in both the men's and women's divisions. Dartmouth won the men's meet with 79 points, followed by Brown (59) and Harvard (32); the Crimson women (30) also placed third behind the Big Green (75) and the Bruins (42).

Despite the pair of third-place finishes, there were several bright spots for the Crimson.

Junior James Russell won the hammer throw for Harvard with a toss of 61-ft., 8-in., while freshman Greg Agran captured the 60-yd. dash in 6.56.

Though he failed to win an event, Co-Captain Robert Gustafson had a strong meet for the Crimson. Gustafson took second place in the long jump and third in the triple jump, earning some rare team points.

Harvard also took second place in the 4 x 800- meter relay with a time of 7:54.94.

For the women, Captain Erin Sugrue continued her indoor season dominance, winning the high jump with a leap of 5-ft., 8-in. and the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.43.

Meanwhile, Meredith Rainey--only a freshman--won the 400-meter race in 57.44 and took second in the 200 meters. Rainey figures to be a strong force on the women's track team for several years.

The Harvard women also took second place in the 4 x 800 meter relay, while sophomores Laura Blodgett and Katie Toner took third in the triple jump and the 1500-meter run respectively.

"We just didn't run well," freshman Jonathan Lewis said of the meet.

The next meet for the Crimson is his Saturday against Princeton and Yale at the Gordon Indoor Track and Tennis Facility.
