Gridders Turn Green Black and Blue

Remember the old Heinz catsup commercial? "Anticipation, it's making me wait..."

Today at the Stadium, the Harvard football team didn't have to wait long for its Hinz to get the Crimson running game going.

Halfback Tony Hinz scored touchdowns in the second and third quarters and tore up the Big Green defense for 152 yards rushing to lead the Crimson to a 42-3 victory in front of 20,500 spectators.

The Crimson (2-1 Ivy League) remains in strong contention for the Ivy title, especially coming on the heels of Brown's 23-15 victory over previously undefeated Cornell (2-1). Meanwhile, the Green continues to falter, falling to 1-4 on the year.

The Big Red dropped into a five-way tie for first place in the Ivy League with Harvard, Brown, Penn and Princeton, all owners of 2-1 league records.

In other action around the league today: Navy popped Penn, 38-28; Princeton escaped Lehigh, 16-15; and Yale added to Columbia's woes, 27-13.

For first-year Dartmouth Coach Buddy Teevens, a former Big Green quarterback and Ivy League Most Valuable Player, it was a frustrating return to the Stadium.

In 1978, during Teevens' final year as a Green player, Dartmouth lost only one game, falling a half-game shy of the Ivy title. The Green's only loss was to Harvard at the Stadium.

Today's massacre looked nothing like 1978's 24-19 Harvard victory.

In the latter game, Teevens threw for 223 yards. In today's contest, it was Harvard's quarterback, Tom Yohe, who exhibited his aerial talents. Yohe completed 16 of 26 passes for 237 yards and tossed three touchdowns. Yohe now has 12 TD passes on the year. Fifteen is the Harvard season record.

Last year as a sophomore, Yohe got his first start against Dartmouth. It was a portent of things to come. In that game, Yohe ran for 120 yards and passed for 106 to lead the Crimson to a 42-26 victory.

He was just as effective today. And so were his teammates, especially Hinz, the 6-ft., 1-in. fullback from Great Falls, Mont.

Dartmouth won the toss and elected to receive. Bruce Jacob took advantage of a brisk wind, and booted the kickoff into the endzone, giving the Big Green the ball at the 20.

After two running plays went for five yards, Dartmouth went to the air. Green QB Chris Rorke hit David Anderson for a first down at the 31. Rorke rolled left, looking downfield, but his receivers were covered. He tucked the ball to his gut, and sprinted around left end for a first down at the 46.

Rorke again looked to the air on the next series, converting a 10-yard pass to Anderson at the Harvard 49. The Big Green was attacking Harvard's principal weakness--its secondary. After two running plays went for six yards, Rorke fired to wideout Craig Morton at the 30, but Morton dropped the ball and the pass was ruled incompletre.

Following a short Dartmouth punt, the Crimson took over at its own 16, with 11:15 left in the quarter.

On 2nd-and-10, Yohe dropped back, but his receivers were covered downfield, and Yohe was smothered by Matt Walko for a 10-yard loss. Another Yohe pass fell incomplete, and the Crimson had to punt.

After a short return, the Big Green took command at the Harvard 46. A handoff up the middle was stooped by Harvard Captain Kevin Dulsky and his mates. Rorke took to the air on second-and-11, finding Anderson on the right for a seven-yard reception. Rorke bobbled the ensuing snap and Harvard lineman Rich Mau jumped on the ball, giving Harvard possession on the 38 with eight minutes left in the quarter.

On second down and long, Yohe found Tony Hinz across the middle for an eight-yard gain, setting up 3rd-and-three. A Yohe bomb fell out of reach and Hall was called on to punt again. Dartmouth took over at its own 13 with 6:40 left. Two running plays up the middle went for seven yards, giving Rorke and crew 3rd-and-three. Rorke gave the Green a first down by hitting Chris Keck, a hefty tight-end, over the middle.

On 3rd-and-eight in the next series, Rorke lined up in the shotgun and fired an interception into the hands of Crimson cornerback Frank Caprio, who took the ball at the 40 and raced to the 6 yard line.

The Crimson was called for illegal use of hands, so Yohe and company had to take over at the 11 with 4:26 left in the quarter.

A Hinz run was stopped for no gain on 1st-and-10. Yohe rolled right and fired a pass to Hinz, who bobbled the ball and watched helplessly as it fell to the ground. On the next play, Yohe scrambled right, scanning the field, before finding a wide open Brian Barringer in the right corner of the endzone for a 6-0 Crimson lead with 3:39 left. It was Yohe's 10th touchdown pass of the season--within striking distance of the all-time Harvard season record of 15.

Bruce Jacob converted the extrapoint to put Harvard up, 7-0.

Dartmouth returned Jacob's kick to the 22, and the Big Green offense took over. Nick Stanham took a hand-off up the middle on 1st-and-10 and raced nine yards before being hauled down by Mau. On second down, Dartmouth fullback Terry Thillis bulled over the middle for a Green first down.

On 1st-and-10 from the Green 34, Rorke found Anderson for an eight-yard gain. A run on second down was thwarted, Rorke and his halfback crossed signmals, and the ball fell to the turf before Rorke fell on it.

After a punt, the Crimson took over at its own 34, On 3rd-and-long, Yohe found running back Bob Glatz over the middle at the Harvard 44. Glatz picked the ball out of a swarm of Dartmouth defenders. The quarter ended with Harvard on top, 7-0, and Harvard in posession of the ball.

On first down, Yohe rolled right and hit Dave Bunning for a first down. After a four-yard gain by Bunning up the middle, Yohe rolled out left and hit wide-open tight-end Don Gajewski for a 17-yard gain.

Dartmouth recovered a Harvard fumble on the ensuing first down. On 3rd-and-7 Rorke hit Morton on the right sideline for a 15-yard first down gain.

After a botched Dartmouth punt, Harvard took over at the Green 45. Hinz busted up the middle, eluding several tackles for a 21-yard gain. On a play action, Yohe rolled out and hit Bunning for a 14-yard pick-up to the Green four-yard line.

Hinz then dragged Dartmouth inside linebacker Paul Michael into the endzone with him for Harvard's second TD of the afternoon at the 9:54 mark. Jacob's extra point made it 14-0, Crimson.

The Green settled for a 26-yard field goal by kicker Carl Romero with 5:27 to go in the quarter, cutting the Crimson lead to 14-3.

Back-up Harvard QB Tim Perry brought the kickoff to the 25. On 1st-and-10, Hinz broke off the right tackle and--with a quick burst of speed--raced 25 yards to midfield.

After Harvard jumped offsides, Bunning carried up the middle, cut left, cut back right, and ended up with a 17-yard gain and another first down.

Yohe hit Don Gajewski on a play action for 18 yards over the middle as Harvard's offense continued to steamroll.

On a second-down play, Yohe hit Bunning over the middle on a play action and Bunning scampered into the endzone, giving Yohe his second TD pass of the afternoon and 11th on the season.

Jacob's conversion put the Crimson ahead, 21-3, with 3:49 left in the half.

Two incompletions and an unsuccessfull draw play stalled Dartmouth's next drive. On 4th-and-11, Dartmouth lined up nine players on the right sideline and attempted a quick out pass. Harvard's Gescuk stopped the Green short of the first down. Harvard took over at the Dartmouth 34, and on first down, Yohe went long for Bunning. Bunning caught the ball at the 5 and tiptoed into the endzone, but the play was wiped out because of a holding penalty.

Operating from its own 25, the Big Green offense made one last drive, but got no further than its own 40, and Harvard brought a 21-3 lead into the locker room at the half.

Where's the Edge?

Barringer took a Yohe pass on the right flat to set up 1st-and-10 on the 40. On first down, Lucas took a pass over the middle and raced to the 25 yard line. Harvard was on a roll.

On second down, Glatz raced up the middle to the 19 for a first down. On the next play, Yohe faded back and found Lucas over the middle for a TD, Yohe's 12th of the year. Jacob converted for a 28-3 Crimson advantage.

Jacob booted two kickoffs out of bounds before putting one in play. Dartmouth took over at the 40 with 12 minutes left in the quarter.

Dartmouth managed to get the ball to the 50--thanks to a couple of Rorke scrambles--and then pushed it to the 30 on a pass from Rorke to Kech.

But another Caprio interception three plays later, and Harvard took over at its own 10 with 10:23 left in the quarter.

Enter Hinz again. The big back took a second-down hand-off on the 27 and raced up the middle, then broke to the outside. He outsprinted the Dartmouth secondary and raised his arms in triumph as he crossed the goal line. Jacob converted and Harvard led, 35-3, with 8:40 left in the quarter.

The Crimson rout was on.

The fourth quarter brought much of the same. A lengthy Harvard drive early in the quarter brought the Crimson to Dartmouth's four yard line. Hinz's running mate, Bunning, took a first-down handoff and sprinted through the middle, fighting his way into the endzone. Jacob was good again: Harvard, 42-3.
