Last night's Harvard-Boston College water polo Beanpot semifinal had all the makings of a comedy.
First, Harvard came out with new red swimming caps with funny little H's at the base of the neck.
Second, Boston College's pre-game warm-up looked like something out of "Sports Spotlight," as balls shot by the Eagles hit each other more often than they hit the net.
Finally, senior Tri-Captain Fred Sherrer was out of the line-up and in stitches--the kind incurred from a flying elbow.
The game, too, turned out to be a laugher, as Harvard advanced to tomorrow's Beanpot final with a 14-7 thrashing of the Chestnut Hill denizens last night at Blodgett Pool.
The Crimson used eight goals from San Diegoans John Marshall and Nick Branca to lead the offensive attack. Marshall led the team with five.
Branca was also a defensive menace, getting six steals. One steal led to a one-on-one showdown with the Eagle goalie, which he converted.
"I've been weak on defense recently," said Branca. "It was something to concentrate on tonight."
B.C.'s "D"?
Harvard scored in almost every conceivable fashion in preparation for an expected showdown with MIT, which played Boston University last night. The Crimson used a steal from the B.C. goalie, a redirected pass, a rebound off the post, a shorthanded goal, a lob and several fastballs to score.
THE NOTEBOOK: Speaking of "Sports Spotlight," Bob Lobel and WBZ-TV Channel 4 are reportedly interested in covering the final game tomorrow. There should be a lot of crowd shots.
