The Harvard women's ice hockey team skated to victory 5-1 over Dartmouth last night at Bright Hockey Center in its first game of the new year. The Crimson got two goals from Brita Lind, and one each from Karen Carney, Julie Sasner, and Char Joslin. Nancy Toland scored the lone Dartmouth goal.
Harvard's victory, before a crowd of 250 people, was especially sweet because Crimson Coach John Dooley had named the Big Green as the Crimson's main contender for the Ivy title this year.
Coming out fast and furious in the first period, Harvard forced Dartmouth goalie Kelley Coyne to make 24 saves and still managed to slip three goals past the Green netminder. Lind led the way, scoring the first goal on a Sasner assist. "It's just infectious when one person, like Brita, is skating really fast," Sasner said. "She brought the whole team up."
Lind tallied goal number two, while Carney wound up the first period scoring on an assist from Lind. "Harvard was all over us in the first period," said Toland. "In the second period we tried to play a more disciplined game."
And that they did. Dartmouth dominated the second period play, trying to tire out Harvard with a more controlled passing strategy. Crimson goalie Jen White, however, prevented a Dartmouth takeover in the second period with seven impressive saves. Sasner scored the fourth Harvard goal, assisted by Lind and Joslin. Toland then notched the lone tally for the Big Green with 6:30 left in the middle stanza.
Both teams demonstrated fatigue in the third period, which remained scoreless until the final two minutes when Joslin fired in the fifth and final Crimson tally.
