Billionaire Investor Gerald Chan Under Scrutiny for Neglect of Historic Harvard Square Theater
Shucks. While sunning yourself back home on the beaches of Cleveland this summer, you missed all the hoopla surrounding Harvard's 350th anniversary here in Cambridge. You know, Prince Charles, the John Harvard marionette, Walter Cronkite, fireworks in the Stadium, and the whole bit.
Don't feel too badly, though. The so-called undergraduate 350th celebration is slated for next weekend. And you can also purchase a coterie of wonderful little 350th trinkets still being marketed in Harvard Square.
By the way, this is the first time Harvard is marketing its name in officially-sanctioned "commemorabilia." Here's an unofficial list of 350th souvenirs still on sale--three weeks after The Event:
. Finely-crafted CHOCOLATE SHIELDS, at four ounces apiece, shaped like the 350th emblem and wrapped in distinctive gold foil. At the Harvard Coop for $5.99.
. A TAPE-RECORDING of "Harvard Voices," featuring famous speakers who have addressed Harvard audiences. At the Coop for $9.95.
. Crimson-colored CUSHIONS for your tush. It J. August for $12.00.
. Official Harvard ROSETTES (that's Ivy League talk for lapel pins). At the Andover Shop for $12.50.
. Polo-style SHIRT with smart-looking 1636-1986 emblem over the left pocket. At J. August for $24.00.
. Pure silk TIE, crimson with gold stripes, at the Coop for $25.00.
. Fancy crimson-colored SUSPENDERS. At the Andover Shop for $27.50.
. THE HARVARD GAME, "350 Years of Harvard Trivia," sold at the Coop for $34.95.
. Set of seven commemorative CHINA PLATES. At the Coop for $200.00.
. Fourteen karat GOLD WATCH with a 350th dial for $225.00.
. Four PAINTINGS of Harvard by French artist Michel Delacroix for $1650.00 at Newbury Fine Arts.
