Sailors Frighten Terriers, Place Second at Aylmers

The Harvard varsity sailing team placed an impressive second place at the Aylmers Trophy on Charles River Saturday.

Sailing in the A divison, Harvard's Gordon Burnes and Petra Schumann sailed past everyone to finish in first place with 16 points.

The duo captured four first places out of seven races.

In the B divison, Harvard's Alex Sutton and Charlene Li racked up 19 points, which placed them in second. Sutton and Li tallied two first places.

Its 35 points left the Crimson behind B.U. (33), which is one of the top three teams in the nation.

In the New England Women's Championship at Providence, R.I., Harvard placed fifth with 125 points.

Only the top four squads qualified automatically for Nationals, so the Crimson will now have to play the waiting game to see if it qualifies for Nationals in June.

In the A divison, Harvard's Jane Fogg and Dana Barron tallied 71 points, good enough for fifth.

Sailing in the B divison, Harvard's Betsy Robinson and Tammy Harvey racked up 54 points, which also placed them in fifth. Robinson and Harvey captured two first places and three seconds.

History was made, as the first seven teams finished in identical place order in both A and B divisions. The Crimson's 125 points placed it behind Dartmouth (116), Yale (97), Tufts (70), and Brown (53).

Meanwhile, the Harvard varsity sailing team finished seventh in the B.U. Trophy on the Charles River.

In the A divison, Harvard's John Pernick and Beth Pryor won the first race of the day, but eventually finished in a tie for fourth.

In the B divison, Harvard's Peter Wagner and Jeff Kurland tallied 36 points.

Junior Varsity

The Harvard JV sailing team finished in the third place to close out the Northern Series at Charles River.

Harvard's Dan Kowalski and Mary Soparkar racked up 37 points in the A division, to finish sixth.

Sailing in the B divison, Harvard's Dan Elbaum and Alisa Gardner tallied 28 points, which placed them in second. Elbaum and Gardner captured one first, a second, and three thirds.

The Crimson's 65 points placed it behind B.U. (64) and Tufts (49).

In the freshman championships, Harvard only managed an eighth place finish on the Charles.

Paul O'Connor and Deb Dubin placed sixth in the A division with 58 points for the Crimson. Sailing in the B divison, Harvard's Jim Rothwell and Katrina Yamin finished in ninth place with 80 points.
