Men's Fencing

In the two-day Easterns Tournament held at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., this weekend, the Harvard men's fencing team placed fifth as a team, and sent two squad members to the finals in individual competition. Columbia nabbed first place team honors in a field of 12 squads.

"Basically, we had hoped to do a lot better than that," Crimson Co-Captain Luca Cicchetti said. "Our season indicated that we would do a lot better."

Harvard's epee team placed third, and its foil team finished fifth--and all of the squad's foil and epee fencers earned berths in the individual round.

Kevin McCarthy was the lone sabre fencer to make individual semis.

Epee fencers Jim O'Neill and Thor Wilbanks were the only swordsmen to reach the finals in individuals, with O'Neill eventually finishing sixth and Wilbanks eighth. Meanwhile, Ray Carthy missed making the finals in foil by one touch.

Both O'Neill and freshman Jim "Jello" Rothwell turned in exceptional performances in the team round of competition, each compiling a 9-2 record.

Men's Track

In IC4A competition at Princeton over the weekend, the Harvard men's track team compiled a disappointing three points.

Cliff Sheehan contributed two points by placing fifth in the mile, in a time of 4:12.03. James Russell added the other point with a 58-ft., 6-1/2-in. toss in the 35-lb. weight throw.
