HANOVER, N.H.--Paul Rai scored two power-play goals last night to lead the Dartmouth men's hockey team to a 5-3 upset triumph over RPI, the defending national champion.
It was the first time in seven tries dating back to 1981 that Dartmouth beat RPI.
The Big Green scored four power-play goals and added a short-handed tally in the come-from-behind victory, which was sparked by Andy Donahue's goal with just over two minutes remaining in the second period.
Ned Desmond put Dartmouth ahead, 1-0, on a power-play score at 14:49 of the first period, when he whistled a slapshot past RPI's reserve goalie Tony Martino. The Engineers tied the game 30 seconds later, when Bob DiPronio beat Dartmouth goalie Jeff Bower.
Mark Jooris gave RPI its only lead of the game at 18:52 of the first period when his wristshot hit Bower in the mask and trickled into the net Bower was replaced momentarily in the goal by Tim Osby but returned to finish the game with 36 saves. The Green outscored RPI 3-1 in the second period to take a 4-3 lead into the third.
Rai scored his first of the night at 1:26 on the power play, and Doug Weiss scored a short-handed goal three minutes later to give the hosts a 3-2 lead.
When Jooris tipped in a Mike Dark slapshot with just over five minutes left in the second period, the game was tied at 3-3. Donahue then beat Martino with a wristshot at 17:12 of the second period on the power play to give Dartmouth the lead for good.
Rai's second goal at 10:32 of the third period iced the win for Dartmouth, which is 7-15 overall and 4-14 in the ECAC. The Engineers fell to 19-7-1 overall and 12-5-1 in ECAC play.
