The Cambridge City Council passed a strict amendment to its anti-smoking ordinance last night at city hall. As of March 8, 1987:

.Smoking is illegal in any place to which the public is admitted or invited, including libraries, restrooms, stores, bank lobbies, auditoriums, schools, and theatres. Dormitories, VFW halls, beano parlors, and private functions such as weddings are exempt.

.Work areas must be smoke-free unless the employer permits smoking in a separate area where it will not disturb non-smokers. Employers are not required to provide such areas even if some of their employees are smokers. Smoking lounges may not be larger or have more seats than those for non-smokers. In businesses that occupy 1500 square feet or less of office space, smoking may be permitted by the employees' unanimous decision.

.Employees may complain about office smoking policy to the city commissioner of health, but in all cases non-smokers' health concerns will be given precedence.

.Violators of the ordinance are subject to misdemeanor charges and fines from $25 to $100.
