Garber Privately Tells Faculty That Harvard Must Rethink Messaging After GOP Victory
Despite Harvard's disappointing 85-61 consolation game defeat by Boston University in the Boston Four Tournament Saturday night in Northeastern's Cabot Gym, it was a record-breaking evening for Harvard junior guard Barb Keffer.
Keffer set a Harvard all-time single-game record with her 30 total points. The old record of 29 was held jointly by Nancy Boutilier and Leslie Gries. Keffer also tied Boutilier's record for most field goals in a single outing with 14.
"[Keffer] had a really hot night," Harvard Coach Kathy Delaney Smith said. "We had trouble starting the offense so she went one-on-one a lot, which is what she needed to do."
Keffer shot 14-for-21 from the floor (67 percent) and sunk two free throws in her record-breaking effort. The Broomall, Penn., native also contributed four rebounds.
Heifer-less
But while Keffer was having an outstanding shooting night, the Crimson shot poorly overall--41 percent from the floor and a dismal 38 percent from the charity line.
"[The loss] was a combination of poor shooting and poor shot selection," Delaney Smith said. "Our offense was terrible. It was rushed, panicky, and there were a lot of one-on-one's with very little team play."
The Crimson only had six assists, with two apiece from Keffer and freshman guard Heidi Kosh.
While Harvard suffered offensively, the Terriers were strong both from the floor (55 percent) and from the foul line (61 percent). Lisa Smith led B.U. with 21 points and eight rebounds. Junior Co-Captain Sharon Hayes was second in scoring for the Crimson with eight points.
Junior Nancy Cibotti, who led the Crimson in both scoring (13) and rebounding (eight) in Friday night's game with Northeastern, grabbed seven rebounds against B.U., as did freshman Melinda Nelson.
We gave them more offensive rebounds than we were able to get," Delaney Smith said. "We didn't box them out." The Terriers outrebounded Harvard, 39-37.
"We weren't really up for the game," Hayes said. "We had a lack of intensity and we were a little intimidated."
The Boston Four Tournament--in its inaugural year--showcased some of the strongest teams in the Northeast, such as Boston College (the eventual champion) and Northeastern.
"We should learn from it," Delaney Smith said. "For the first time in the history of Harvard we can play with these big teams."
