Sailors Coast at Weekend Regattas; Wagner Earns Single-Handed Berth

By Michael J. Lartigue

At the New England single-hand sailing championships Saturday in New London, Conn., Harvard's Peter Wagner finished in fourth place.

And as one of the top four finishers, Wagner qualified to compete in November's North American Championships in Mobile, Ala. Wagner ended the competiton with 98 points, four points ahead of the fifth-place finisher.

At the last turn of the day's last race, Wagner found himself in fifth place with less than 50 yards to go--but he made a strong surge to overtake Brown's Bob Fryer and nail down the fourth-place finish.

Time Flies When You're Having Fun

A New England Regatta rule states that Sunday races cannot start after 4:30 p.m.

Things were starting to look good at the Hood Trophy Sunday at Tufts, as the Crimson vaulted into first place with a large margin. By the time Harvard's Gordon Burnes and Petra Schumann won their last race of the day, it was about 4:25.

But the B divison race could not get started before the deadline--causing Harvard's A divison race to be nullifed, and dropping the Crimson into third place.

The sailors finished with 92 points, one point behind second-place Tufts, and five behind first-place Boston University.

In the B divison, John Pernick and Jeff Kurland tallied 46 points for a third-place Crimson finish.

Harvard was less sharp at Brown as the Crimson JV placed a disappointing third in the Sharpe Trophy Saturday. Harvard only managed to defeat one team at the Regatta and finished with a 1-4 mark.

Women

The Radcliffe varsity sailing team finished sixth at the Yale Women's Regatta over the weekend at Yale University.

In the A division, the Black and White's Julia Trotman and Mary Lohres sailed the first day of competiton, but were relieved on the second day by Jane Fogg and Dana Barron.

The A duos combined to finish in fifth place. In the B divison, Betsy Robinson and Tammy Harvey finished in sixth place.
