The Harvard women's swimming team overcame both exhaustion and a weak Dartmouth squad Saturday in Hanover, N.H., trouncing the Big Green, 84-54.
The meet directly followed a week-long training trip to Honolulu for the Crimson.
Although the aquawomen won by thirty points, the score could have been even more lopsided. By placing Crimson swimmers in different events and having many of them swim for exhibition only, Coach Maura Costin managed to keep the score respectable.
Performing especially well for Harvard were divers Shannon Byrd and Jennifer Greene, who defeated their Dartmouth counterparts in both one-and three-meter competition.
Freshman Karen Schneider paced the Crimson in the swimming events, winning both the 200 backstroke and 200 butterfly, and swimming one leg of the victorious medley relay team.
The victory upped Harvard's record to 5-0 and gave the squad a 7-3 all-time dual-meet edge over Dartmouth. In addition, the team shattered nine meet records in the process.
"Because we were all tired from the Hawaii trip," Captain Annie Wilson said, "we were less concerned about individual times than with winning events.
Harvard's next competition will be this Friday, when the squad takes on both Boston University and the University of Hawaii. Both schools boast formidable opposition--B.U. defeated the Crimson last year and U. of H. is ranked in the nation's top 20.
Costin remained optimistic about Friday's meet, noting that "one of the reasons for scheduling such strong competition is to challenge ourselves to swim to the best of our ability. With the exception of Brown, the teams that we are facing this weekend are tougher than any we have faced to date. I hope our intensity will be equally strong."
