Harvard Motorcycle Officer Stable After Monday Crash

A Harvard policeman remained in stable condition at Mt. Auburn hospital last night, recovering from injuries he suffered when a car hit the motorcycle he was riding and threw him more than 30 feet early Monday morning.

The officer, Joseph Hale, was responding to a call at about 7:30 a.m. Monday, when a car driven by a Watertown man struck him at the corner of Chauncy and Garden Streets near the Radcliffe Quadrangle.

Cambridge and Harvard police are investigating the accident. But the driver of the car, Michael C. Miller, 24, of 36 Melendy Ave., Watertown, has been cited for operating an automobile with an invalid driver's license.

Hale, in the intensive care unit of Mt. Auburn Hospital, was reported to be recovering from head, back and thigh injuries.

The Harvard Police will hold a benefit dance for Hale in October, Harvard Police Captain Jack W. Morse said.
