Responding to chronic accusations that it is one of Harvard's most unfriendly concentrations, the Government Department has organized an undergraduate affairs committee to improve communication between Government concentrators and faculty.

Government Department Chairman Robert D. Putnam and Head Tutor Mark Beissinger will head the committee, which will include one Government concentrator from each of the 12 undergraduate Houses.

"The Government Department often gets a bad tap for being a distant place Part of out intention is to improve accessibility to everyone." Putnam said, The committee is tentatively set to meet for the first time Later in the month, but has not yet formalized its meeting schedule.

Beissinger said that large departments at Harvard--like Government-need undergraduate affairs committees to communicate student concerns to department officials for action. The Government committee will discuss tutorials, honors degree criteria and other concerns.

Selection of student representatives would be handled by each House's resident tutors in Government Names of students on the committee were not available.
