The Bureau of Study Counsel has formed a new group to teach students how to manage anxiety in interpersonal relationships.
The aim of the new Assertiveness Training Group, said group councilor Deborah Pilgrim, is to build confidence in students who have difficulty in communicating with others.
Although conducted in group sessions, training in confidence will be tailored to each student's need. "Whatever a student brings that he's having trouble doing, that's what we'll focus on and help him overcome," Pilgrim said.
The Bureau of Study Counsel decided to hold the training sessions following numerous worries by students about speaking up in class, Pilgrim said, adding that students voiced an interest in an advisory group.
The Assertiveness Training Group, a descendant of the bureau's "Shy Group" offered last year, focuses more on confidence-building strategies.
The Assertiveness Training Group sessions, to start November 12, will be held from 12-1:30 p.m. every Tuesday for six weeks at the Bureau of Study Counsel on Linden St.
