At least there were few witnesses to the destruction.
The Harvard women's volleyball team travelled to Northeastern's Doxer Gymnasium yesterday and was summarily executed--in front of barely two dozen fans--by the Husky spikers.
Northeastern needed just an hour to dispatch the Crimson (now 0-3 in regular season play) in three straight matches 15-5, 15-5, and 15-3.
"There is nothing disgraceful about losing," Coach Seth Farber said, "but it is upsetting when you just give the game away."
And Harvard did truly give away the game. Balls sailed through Crimson arms, bounced off Crimson shoulders, and were hit up among the rafters.
The Huskies clearly dominated all three matches. Northeastern led 12-1 in the first match before the spikers rallied a bit to score four points. The hosts then scored seven straight points to open the second match, and had a substantial lead throughout the third.
"We were intimidated and we choked," freshman Nancy Prior said. "We definitely didn't play our best."
The spikers next game is Tuesday at home against MIT. With a week to practice, Farber hopes to smooth the rough edges and up the confidence level of the players.
"We play Northeastern one more time this season at home," Farber said. "Next time let's make them at least fight for their win."
