Michael Shinagel, dean of the Extension School, will serve as acting master of Leverett House next semester in place of Judy and John E. Dowling '57.
Dowling will spend the spring in Japan, conducting research in neurobiology.
Shinagel, also a senior lecturer in the English department, has been affiliated with Eliot House for several years as a non-resident English tutor.
Shinagel said yesterday he looks forward to the opportunities for closer contact with students. "I've had four children myself, who all are through college now, so I think I know how to deal with students pretty well," he added.
At least one of Shinagel's colleagues is less certain. When Shinagel said that when he told a psychiatrist friend of his appointment, "he put his hands on my shoulders, and said, 'that's too bad, you'll have to come see me professionally after you start.'"
Dowling worked last semester to introduce students to Shinagel through a variety of events, said Diane Bowen, assistant to the masters.
"Everyone seems to be making the adjustment," said Bowen. "I am really looking forward to working with him."
Shinagel said he will move into Leverett Saturday after Dowling departs today.
