Trudeau to Speak at IOP

Former Canadian prime minister Pierre E. Trudeau will speak at Harvard next Monday, but only a select group of students will hear him.

Institute of Politics Fellow Thomas Axworthy, who was Trudeau's principal secretary, and chief of staff, invited Trudeau to speak privately to the first meeting of his 4 p.m. study group.

Consultations

Trudeau, who supports nuclear disarmament, will discuss the arms race and the historical dominance of the liberal party in Canada, particularly in relation to his recent ministry, Axworthy said.

The seminar, entitled "The Future of Liberalism," will examine liberalism and recent shifts toward the right in the U.S., Great Britain, and Canada, Axworthy said.

Other guest speakers include journalists, consultants, and David Steel, leader of the British Liberal Party.

"A lot of near people are going to be [guests] at the seminar," said one study group member who asked not to be identified. He added that he had not known that Trudeau would be a guest until he received a schedule in the mail.

Axworthy's seminar is one of 15 offered this semester at the I.O.P. Open to undergraduates and graduate students, the informal groups examine politics and public policy issues. Other subjects include U.S. policy in Central America, gay and lesbian political participation, and the Arab-Israeli conflict.
