The University has chosen four men and one woman to serve on the Board of Overseers, one of Harvard's two governing boards.
The five will serve six-year terms on the 30-member board. The board is largely ceremonial as a whole, but the individual members can exert powerful influence through their seats on various committees which examine various areas of the University.
The new Overseers are:
*Leo L. Beranek, director of Bolt, Beranek, and Newman Inc., a Cambridge based research and development firm;
*Lewis M. Branscom, vice president and chief scientist of IBM;
*Donna R. Ecton, vice president for administration of Campbell Soup;
*Peter C. Goldmark Jr.'62, executive director of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey;
*Arnold M. Hiatt '48, chairman and chief executive officer of the Stride Rite Corporation, a shoe manufacturer;
The official responsibilities of the Overseers are to review all major decisions made by the University's other, more executive, governing board, the Corporation, to help set general Harvard policy, and to handle the selection of a new president.
