Bring on the playoffs, because the Harvard baseball team has never been so ready.
The Crimson brought its 27-4 regular season to a close yesterday in peak form, sweeping a doubleheader at Brandeis, 18-1, 5-3, to capture the Greater Boston League (GBL) championship.
Harvard had already earned a berth in the NCAA Northeast Regional by virtue of the Eastern Intercollegiate Baseball League title, which the Crimson wrapped up Wednesday. The winner of the regional, played Memorial Day weekend, earns a spot in the College World Series.
And the batmen are definitely in playoff shape, averaging just under 13 runs per game in their last seven outings. The five-run nightcap ended a six-game streak of double-figure scoring Down 9-1 in the second inning of Saturday's game with Dartmouth. Harvard showed the heart and the muscle to bounce back for a 15-13 victory.
Everybody's hitting. In the opener at Brandeis, it was left fielder Scott Vierra, who announced his intentions with a first-inning grand slam, then got two more RBIs, two more hits and a stolen base.
In the nightcap, it was T.J. Andre, the junior second baseman who stepped into the gap left by injuries to Gaylord Lyman and Mike Pakalnis. In his fifth varsity appearance. Andre homered and went four for four with three RBIs and a stolen base.
Meanwhile, both Crimson starters tossed complete-game beauties Junior Charlie Marchese stretched his record to 7-0 with a six-hitter in the opener, while classmate Jeff Musselman pitched a four-hitter in the nightcap.
THE NOTEBOOK: Brandeis is 22-7 Sophomore third baseman Bobby Kay was hit in the left arm by a Ross Nadean fast ball in the first inning of the opener yesterday Kay had to leave the game in the fourth. "I think I'm all right." Kay said last night. "They don't think it's broken." He'll be x-rayed at UHS today just to be sure....Pakalnis is recovering from a broken nose suffered in batting practice last week. Lyman is recovering from a hyperextended knee suffered against Army....Harvard won back-to-back crowns GBL in 1980 and 1981. They are Harvard's only two other GBL championships since 1973....Despite the comparative rarity of GBL championships, the batmen care infinitely more about the Eastern League crown, which earns the team a playoff spot. "We should win [the GBL]." Crimson Captain Bruce Weller said. "We're the best team in the league year in and year out." Brandeis, which won the GBL two years ago, and Tufts, which won last year, care more about the league. Game-Winning RBI--Vierra E--Highes 2 Bonilla Andre DP--Harvard 1 LOB--Harvard 1.
