Batman Throttle Boston College, 10-2; Marchese, Marchok Throw Five-Hitter

By Mike Knobler

With all the fuel efficiency of a Japanese car the Harvard baseball team zoomed past Greater Boston League for Boston College, 10-2, in its home opener yesterday at frigid Soldiers field.

The Crimson cashed in its 10 runs on just eight hits, and stranded only four runners, bringing new meaning to the word "scrappy". Meanwhile, junior Charlie Marchese and freshman Chris Marchok teamed to allow the Eagles a scant five hits.

Harvard's nickle-and-dime attack made its debut with two outs in the second inning. Right fielder Scott Vierra drew a walk, shortstop Tony DiCesare reached on an error, and second baseman Gaylord Lyman slapped on the single to center. The ball got by center fielder Larry Hill, allowing DiCesare to score and Lyman to reach third.

Sophomore Paul Vallone used his head and dragged a hunt down the third-base line to score Lyman. The totals: three runs on two hits, and only one ball hit out of the infield.

That's the sort of resourcefulness you need when you lose your top four hitters, more than half your rbi's and 25 of 42 home runs to graduation. Another kind of resourcefulness is successful recruiting, and Coach Alex Nahigian seems to have scored some coups.

Catcher Jim DePalo's two-double, three-rbi performance yesterday gives him a three-game collegiate total of seven hits and nine rbi's in 13 at bats. "He's a fine baseball player," said Nahigian of the freshman from Natick, Mass.

Then there's freshman pitcher Marchok who picked up his second save with three near-perfect innings yesterday. Marchok faced nine batters and erased his only mistake when he picked off James Adams who had just slapped a one-out pinch-hit single in the seventh.

Marchese pitched six innings of four hit ball but wasn't overly excited with his 1984 northern debut, which was marred only by a hanging change-up that became a two-run homer.

"It was a fair game," said Marchese, now 2-0.

Marchese and fellow junior Jeff Mussel-man figure to win starting sports for the Eastern League schedule Marchok and a handful of other pitchers are vying for the two remaining slots.

Harvard appears pretty much set defensively Junior Bobby Kay has great speed and is a fine fielder at third, and Elliott Rivers, who played there last year, has made the transition to first base.

"It's come pretty easy to me," said Rivers, who earned second-team all-Eastern League honors at third last year. He developed tendenitis by overworking his arm, and he said yesterday. "It's not going to be a miraculous recovery."

Bruce Weller, who has shifted from center to left field, had an equally auspicious home opener, with a triple, a double and two rbi's. Weller will remain in the leadoff spot he filled so well last year.
