Icewomen Rip B.U.; Carroll Hat Tricks

When Maria Dunn chose to go to Boston University, she is knew she was in for some excitement.

Last night the freshman Terrier netminder got a lot more than she bargained for, however, as she faced 75 Harvard shots in B.U.'s 10-0 loss in the first round of the women's Beanpot at Northeastern's Matthews Arena.

The Northeastern hosts then whitewashed Boston College, 14-0, in the nightcap, which was even more of a mismatch than the Harvard B.U. blow-out.

The Huskies' victory sets up a tremendous tournament final on Friday, February 17 at 9 p.m. at Northeastern. The Crimson will try to earn its third consecutive upset Beanpot win over the Huntington Avenue Hounds and bring the Pot across the Charles yet again.

Last night the ice women vented the frustration that has been pent up since a disappointing tie at Yale Saturday afternoon. The Crimson outshoot B.U., 75-7, and tallied 10 times, even though Harvard Coach John Dooley rearranged his lines mid-way through the game to try to slow his own skaters down.

The ice women who fired 33 shots on in the first period did not score until 5.06 of the first period when Kathy Carroll took a pretty feed from Dinny Start at the red line, skated in, and poked her own rebound in over the fallen Dunn. Harvard's first line struck again just 18 seconds later, Carroll and right wing Kelly Landry feeding Hurley in the crease.

In the next six minutes, Genie Simmons and Sue Newell each beat Dunn with long shots. The Terrier goalie played a good game and came within two saves of Harvard's Captain and two-time Beanpot MVP goalie Cheryl Tate's tournament record of 67, a mark she reached in a five-overtime contest with Northeastern two years ago. Tate, on the other hand, was in no position to set any records last night. In two periods of play she made two saves.

At 15.03 of the first period Carroll scored again from in close. A minute and a half later, Katrinka Leschey beat Dunn on feeds from linemates Simmons and Pam DiRubio to five the Crimson a 6-0 first period advantage.

Dunn made 20 saves in the second stanza and held Harvard scoreless.

In the final period, the icewomen were quick to find their scoring touch again. At 1:56 Hurley fell on a rush in the Terrier zone, but fed Deb Taft for the goal while down on the ice. Exactly two minutes later junior Mara McTaggart got her first goal of the year from close in.

And exactly six minutes after that, Carroll got a hat trick, score from Newell. The score gave her six points on the night, two off of her own Beanpot record of eight, set in 1983. The points did up her career total to 15, the all-time best.

Leschey finished off the scoring at 16.28 and Harvard had just the easy win it expected.

For Northeastern in the second game. Carolyn Sullivan and Michaelle Surette had hat tricks and Kerrie Cronin and Toni Picariello had two goals apiece to pace the Huskies' merciless attack.

Fourth ranked in the nation, Northeastern seems better this year than ever Harvard will try to counter with its superior desire and superlative goaltending.

Earlier this season, the icewomen dropped a 4-2 decision to the Huskies, the closest Harvard has played the Huskies in a regular season game in the past three years.

So when the Huskies and Crimson collide, the contest seems certain to be as close as yesterday's were apart. At Metthews Arena Boston University  0  0  0  0 Harvard  6  0  4  10
