City Councilor Will Protest Arms Buildup

A group calling itself Local Elected Officials for Social Responsibility will gather in Washington D.C. next week at the National League of Cities. Cambridge City Councilor Francis H. Duehay '55 announced at last night's City Council meeting.

Modeled after similar organizations composed of physicians and teachers, this new group will address the relation ship between increased defense budgets and the fiscal problems of urban America from a "grassroots" approach.

"Local officials are reluctant to challenge defense appropriations and don't understand weapons systems," said Duehay, adding. "The needs of cities and communities are being downplayed."

Duehay helped found this group in cooperation with municipal officials from seven other cities across the country and will lead the local delegation to the National League of Cities March 5 with Mayor Leonard J. Russell.

The National League of Cities is an association of city governments which lobbies federal officials.
