"In 12 years, I have never had a piece of New Business," President Bok opened at February's Faculty meeting. "I wonder if this is a vestige from an earlier era that should be struck from the agenda."

Luckily for Richard N. Frye, Aga Khan Professor of Iranian the item has not been removed from the meeting's agenda.

For the first time at Tuesday's Faculty meeting Bok called out. "Is there any New Business?" and got an answer.

"I've heard again and again the argument that we must build upon strength." Frye stood up to say. Instead he pointed out the Harvard tradition is one of "coverage" of all fields.

"I don't think the tradition is being maintained very well in many cases," he added.

Administrator said they would take Frye's comments into consideration.
