First the good news, then the bad news.

Harvard had a little of both at this weekend's IC4A cross country regional at Bethlehem, Pa.

First he good result Paul Gompers qualified for next weekend's NCAA finals at Penn State by finishing seventh in a contest of more than 370 runners from all over the East Coast.

Gompers whose time of 30 26.5 for 10 Kilometer was only 37 seconds behind the winner becomes the first. Harvard cross-country runner several years to qualify for the NCAAs.

Now the bad result the squad as a whole failed to quality for next weekend's team competition finals.

Sixth

The Crimson came in sixth in its division's team standings, which are determined by the combined times of the school's top five finishers. Only the top two teams quality.

The Cantabs 11th finish in a 51 school field was a marked improvement on last year's 14th out of 40 finish.
