NEW YORK--Overcoming serious stomach cramps and extreme heat and humidity, Orlando Pizzolato, a little-known 26-year-old distance runner from Italy, scored a stunning upset victory in the New York City Marathon yesterday.

But there was no surprise in the women's race, as Grete Waitz of Norway won for the third consecutive year and the sixth time in seven years.

The race was marred by the first death in its history. A French runner identified by race officials as Jacques Bussereau, 48, collapsed after running about 15 miles and was pronounced dead of an apparent heart attack in the emergency room of Elmhurst Hospital in Queens.
