Discount Tickets Nuked by Army

Students heading for West Point Saturday to see the Harvard football team take on Army can leave their discount coupon books behind because of a contract the University has signed with the United States Military Academy.

The contract does not allow for the distribution of discount tickets to students of the visiting school, and as a result, Harvard students must pay the full $11.00 fare for their seat.

This is the only Crimson game this year for which students must pay the full admission price.

Army Ticket Manager William Crim said yesterday that discount tickets for students of the visiting school are "not a part of the contract."

He added that the provision of discount tickets for visiting schools is "not very common" outside of the Ivy League and that "the people who made the contract several years ago felt no need to do so."

Officials in the Harvard ticket office said yesterday that the policy seems to have discouraged many students from purchasing tickets to the game. Despite the fact that Army has allotted a block of several thousand seats for Harvard students, "only a handful have come down to the basement of Harvard Hall to pick up tickets," said Ticket Manager Gordon Page.

"Contracts with each school [are negotiated] individually," according to Page. He added that whenever Harvard travels to Williamsburg, Va to take on William & Mary, students must pay full price for those tickets.

Page added that although most schools outside the Ivy League do not agree to provide reduced price tickets for visiting students. Harvard usually receives some discount from Boston area schools. He cited Holy Cross. Boston University and the University of Massachusetts as colleges whose contracts with Harvard call for reduced the tickets.

The Harvard Army contest game will begin at 2 p.m., Saturday, which is the normal starting time for a game played at West Point, Army sports Information Director Robert Kinney said yesterday.

"Prior to [the ending of] Daylight Saving Time, we always start at two," Kinney said. He added that it was also necessary because many "students have classes on Saturdays that don't get out until the early afternoon.

"Once the sun starts going down earlier, we start at 1:30." Kenney added.

The normal starting time for all Harvard games is 1:30 p.m.

Ivy League athletic directors yesterday selected Pennsylvania and Columbia to highlight the third "Ivy League Game of the Week."

The Lions' trip to Franklin Field in Philadelphia will be broadcast over the Eastern Educational Network beginning at 1 p.m. this Saturday.
