Remember back in 1975 when your grade school teacher said that in 10 years all Americans would be using the metric system. Well, the nation is just a few months away from the government's projected completed conversion date of January 1985 and supermarkets are still selling milk by the gallon.
"I think you'll agree, that the consumer has probably almost lost sight of metric," says Gerald T. Underwood, director of the Commerce Department's Office of Metric Programs, "But, I think you'll find that manufacturers who are exporting good are very much concerned and involved."
The use of dual measurements however, is growing very fast, Underwood continues, cling grocery labeling as one broad example. Moreover, he notes that most schools are teaching with systems.
A more recent government estimate placed the completed conversion date at the year 2000.
