Andrew D. Metz '82, who majored in Physics at Harvard and who had planned to begin work as a nuclear researcher at MIT this week, died Sunday--his 22nd birthday--while mountain-climbing in the Adirondacks.

The accident also took the life of a friend of Metz's Lee Fowler of Cambridge.

Thelma Metz recalled her son yesterday as someone who "was always giving himself challenges," from personal science projects to award-winning research, papers throughout his elementary and secondary school careers.

His advanced work in high school persuaded him to apply to colleges a year earlier than usual and he entered Harvard without staying for his senior year at his hometown high school in Malverne, N.Y.

"He was just so voracious about learning, and he never wasted a moment--he was so curious, so interested, so involved, and so vital," his mother said, citing the advanced science, math, and language courses that her son took at Harvard.

Metz was a member of the Mountaineering Club and a resident of Leverett House. Since graduating, he had been a researcher with a Cambridge consulting firm, and was set to start work at MIT's Lincoln Labs this week, in preparation for beginning doctoral study in theoritical physics.

Metz is survived by his parents, a sister and a brother.

Memorial services for Metz--whose ashes are to be scattered over the Adirondacks--are scheduled for noon, next Sunday, at the Malverne Jewish Center.

The family has asked that contributions, in lieu of flowers, be sent to the Adirondack Mountain Club, at 172 Ridge St., Glen Falls, N.Y. 12801, (Attention; Kim), towards a memorial plaque to be placed at the site of the accident which took Metz's life.
