Batwomen Down Terriers, 6-4, In Come-From-Behind Victory

By Jon Askin

The Harvard women's softball team posted four runs with two out in the bottom of the sixth inning to transform a two run deficit into a 6-4 victory over B.U. at Soldier's Field yesterday.

B.U. opened that second to-last inning by walking two Crimson battery, but Harvard seemed to seal its fate, popping out twice to left field.

Crucial

Thus Lundya Boyer. Harvard's clean up batter, who already had two hits for the game, approached the plate with two out, two on and a two-run Terrier lead. Her third hit of the day, a sharp grounder to center, cut the B.U. edge to one.

Anne Wilson, in similar fashion, walloped the ball at the B.U. second baseman, who demonstrated her juggling prowess while Mary MacKinnon headed home to tie the score. To top off her act, the hapless infielder threw the ball recklessly toward first Boyer beat the ball home and Wilson reached third

A final B.U. error allowed Anne Wilson to cross the plate, capping a Crimson victory and upping Harvard's record to 3-0.

Earlier, though, the Crimson had its hands full trying to avoid a Terrier blow out trailing 4-0 during the third inning.

B.U. gained a three run lead in the top of the first when clean up batter. Audrey Kutchuktan knocked a home run into deep center field. In the third inning. B.U. scored its fourth--but final--run when Harvard catcher Cindy Phillips tried to pick off a B.U. stealer headed for second. Not only was the runner safe, but a B.U. player took the opportunity to steal home.

Prior to its glorious sixth. Harvard had twice loaded the bases, but managed to convert those opportunities into only two runs. In the third inning, with one away. Wilson chopped a grounder over the B.U. pitcher, allowing Nancy Andrea to score for the first Crimson run.

Two innings later. Boyer caught B.U. off guard and laid down a bunt to load the bases. After throwing out Harvard twice at home, the Terrier pitcher walked Chris Lahey, forcing Boyer home for Harvard's second run

"This was our best outing so far." Harvard Coach John Wentzel said, nothing that this was the team's first come-from-behind victory all season. "We are not a power-laden team," he added. "We have intelligent hitters and we can win if they hit hard line drives and grounders like they did in the sixth inning."

B.U. Coach Celeste Myers attributes her team's loss to "slopply play" and an inability to" mdke that last out in the sixth inning."
