Dairy Strike

To the Editors of The Crimson:

H.A. Hovey is a major supplier of dairy products of Harvard Food Services. Unfortunately, the company's workers have been on strike since February 22, protesting Hovey's refusal to recognize the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Union as their bargaining agent.

The company has been engaged in questionable practices; a number of employees have been terminated and others have lost benefits in their effort to unionize the company. It should be noted that two-thirds of Hovey's workers have signed with Local $92 of the Union, and that specific complaints have been made to the National Labor Relations Board.

Harvard, as a major force in the community, has in the past set examples for others to follow. The administration has in the past opposed the restriction on financial aid to students not registered for the draft as well as partial divestiture from companies doing business in South Africa.

Because there are other alternative sources for Hovey's products, the University should make it a policy to stop doing business with the company for the duration of the strike. Nicholas Horton '86   Member, United Food   and Commercial Workers   Local 1262
