Students from several campus groups at the University of Pennsylvania staged a candlelight march earlier this month to protest an April Fool's prank involving the hanging of a female mannequin from a central campus flagpole.
Organizers of the march said the hanging incident was an act of harassment against women and an apparent reference to the alleged gang-rape of a university undergraduate by members of a UPenn fraternity two months ago.
The march was titled "Women Belong at Penn" and was conducted entirely in silence.
"The vigil is to express our sadness that violence against women and sexism are alive and kicking at Penn," said Julie Drizin, a member of the university's Undergraduate Assembly and one of the march's chief organizers. --The Daily Pennsylvanian
